Performance & Metabolism in Mice

grex idf

The Performance & Metabolism  facility in Mice (PMM) provides comprehensive, standardized or advanced, customized characterization of performance and metabolism in mouse models. We offer state-of-the-art services, consultancy and equipment for identification of anatomical, physiological, and behavioral phenotypes. The metabolic exploration platform of Performance & Metabolism performs specific, on-demand experiments as well as comprehensive metabolic analyses to evaluate in vivo the energy balance in mouse. This exploration is performed under either basal condition or energy challenges using standardized techniques for the detection of phenotype in energy metabolism. It provides users with the techniques and scientific support in order to design experimental protocols as well as for the development of new techniques to investigate metabolism.

Body composition analyse

bruckerThis device gives precise analyzes of the body composition for fat content, lean mass and free body fluids in mice. Body composition is evaluated by Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (qNMR) using Minispec+ analyzer (Bruker, Stuttgart, Allemagne). This method facilitates the longitudinal, low stress follow-up of body composition variations.

Acute and/or chronic exercise

tapisWe have 6 computer-controlled, independent and parallel treadmills (TSE, Franckfurt, Germany), allowing the VO2, VCO2, RER (VCO2/VO2) and the energy expenditure measurement by indirect calorimetry. During the exercise, automatic VO2 and VCO2 measurements are made without additional constraint on the animals. The RER indicates the type of substratum mainly oxidized by the animal. We estimate the maximal capacities of the animals (VO2 peak, maximal speed, etc.), and their endurance capacity with or without slope (± 15°).

Besides the metabolic aspects, treadmills allow us to induce a stress that can, on one hand, reveal pathologies and/or rising adaptations, and on the other hand create muscle damage stimulating the regeneration processes.

Voluntary activity

cageEight exercise wheels placed in metabolic cages (TSE, Franckfurt, Germany), each of them equipped with a computer-controlled electromagnetic brake to increase the intensity of the animals’ voluntary activity, allowing the quantification of the activity (frequency, duration, speed and acceleration), will be connected with 8 gas analysers. It allows the VO2, VCO2, RER (VCO2/VO2) measurement as well as the calculation of the energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry.
